I have tried to read the entire Bible many times in my life and I finally did it!! Did I have help? YES. The Bible Recap is amazing at breaking down the reading and Tara Leigh Cobble has a gift that is unmatched! However, the main reason I finished this time is because I gave myself grace to get behind. I was not racing a clock!
Most reading plans are “Read the Bible in Year” plans and I would start, get behind several days and quit. If I couldn’t do it in the year, it was a failure. Why?? I didn’t do it right and I needed to do it perfectly or not at all!
This time I finished the “Read the Bible in a Year” plan in a year and a half. I finished! I will do it again and it will probably take me more than a year then too. It is so easy to drop things if we feel like we are failing, but what if? What if we stuck with it? What if we went ahead and started that business, ran that marathon, or signed up for an art or music lesson. And then, we followed through when the going got tough!!
I was putting undue pressure on myself and creating a timeline that simply did not exist. This was MY project! No one was watching and yet, I quit, so many times.
I had a client who wanted a “signature fundraising event.” We had contracted with a marketing company and they ghosted us so time ran out that year. It took me two years to execute this amazing idea. They had floated a dance contest, black tie event, and a few other things that just didn’t feel right. When we finally implemented Field Day, it was a perfect match for this particular client. It was an amazing success and the organization made more money than anticipated. I could have just dropped this wonderful idea and pretended that it couldn’t be done, but apparently it could! It was a LOT of work and it would have made my life easier to give it up. It was not only successful, it was FUN!
There will always be roadblocks. ALWAYS! There are folks who don’t want you to be successful, there are injuries that take you out for a while, but if a goal is worth it, and, I finally decided that it was more important that I finish the Bible than that I do it on time. That seems like a no brainer looking back. It is really easy to fall into thinking that things have to be just right, but maybe things just have to be worth it to you.
Keep working hard and treat others like you would want to be treated!
